New Year’s Resolutions: Friendship Edition

Here’s how you can include your friends in your new year’s resolutions.

With every new year, comes new year’s resolutions! Ngl, my new year’s resolutions selalu biasa-biasa je actually: I want to save more, exercise more, blah blah blah. But like, I memang try to do that pun. So what’s the point of making those a resolution if I’m already working on ‘em?

So this year, I’ve decided to do something different and really examine the areas in my life I don’t normally prioritize when it comes to making these resolutions. Last month, I wrote about how leaving an unhealthy friendship taught about me kindness. And that’s why I’m making friendships a priority in my 2023 resolutions.

Why You Should Add Friendships to Your New Year’s Resolutions

New year’s resos often focus on setting ourselves up for success. And I’m def guilty of thinking of that as just a me thing, but friendships and connections are so important to our overall happiness. Having close friends who we can turn to for support and comfort can make such a difference in our lives. There’ve been so many times when after a stressful week, all I want is to lepak with my friends and we always end up having a good time.

5 Friendship Resolutions to Get On With

I know friendships should be easy but working on them and giving them time and effort can really help them flourish. Here’s my list of friendship resolutions I’m making in 2023.

  1. I will spend more quality time with my friends
Ada sometimes I lepak dengan kawan tapi we like just chill and zone out. Or we’re distracted by other stuff (especially sebab I ni jenis multitasker yanno). While that’s alright sometimes, it’s also important to spend quality time where they can get my undivided attention. I’m going to reach out to my besties to work out a schedule where we have something like a weekly movie night or a monthly cafe hop.
  1. I will get moving with my buddies
I usually go on my health journey by myself but two or three is always better than one. Because I wanna live a long life and I want my friends to live long, long with me also. So I’m committing to trying out new workout classes with my friends, going for walks or runs together, or even just cooking healthy meals together. Walaupun kita masih muda, gais, health is wealth fr fr.

  1. I wanna revisit connections I’ve accidentally left behind
Korang ada tak kawan yang dulu rapat gila and then without you knowing you guys suddenly just don’t talk anymore? That’s def happened to me! And I can right now think of 6 friends who I don’t keep it touch with as much anymore sebab diorang study overseas or moved countries. So I’m making a conscious effort to reconnect with them at least and keep in touch through video call or a long catch-up text every month at least.
  1. I wanna be better at documenting the friendship
Fam, my memory macam goldfish tau. So I’m going to start commemorating our friendships and hangouts more! Basically, I’m gonna take ALL the selfies! Maybe even make Tiktoks walaupun I sangat camera shy when it comes to videos. It’ll be a great way for us to remember our good times as well as show off my friends. ‘CAUSE THEY DESERVE THAT SPOTLIGHT FOR BEING THE HEAVEN-SENT ANGELS THAT THEY ARE!
  1. Lastly, I want to be more active in showing my appreciation
I’ve been blessed with friends who have stuck with me through thick and thin. So I want to say thank you beyond just words. Whether it’s through small gestures like writing them a note or planning a special outing or gift, I want to make sure that my friends know how much they mean to me. Sweet kan?

Show yourself and your friends some love!

One button says 'taking my friends on a friend date' and the other button is for 'expressing my undying love with a 3-page letter.'So if we’re willing to spend so much time on our hobbies and goals that are important to us, it makes sense to make just as much effort for our besties too.

But it’s also important to remember that friendships are more than just the good times. Healthy friendships also include learning about and respecting boundaries, resolving conflict and valuing each other even for our differences. And those things, kawan-kawanku, take time and effort to nourish. I know we all have a lot going on in our lives so it’s easy to get lost in homework, family and cat videos, but our connections are what make life richer.

Akhir kata: don’t take your friendships for granted – they’re worth the time and effort! Let’s make sure we’re showing our friends some love and appreciation this new year and beyond.
